As I walk through Bath, I realise more and more shops are closed. Retail space left empty across the city directly reflects the collapse of the tourism industry. The pandemic's impact on the place I once called the "Tourist City" is devastating for the cities businesses and its working population. Bricks and mortar service and retail industry remain heavily impacted by the ongoing situation and return to lockdown. As major brands collapse and make national news, hundreds of independent retailers have already closed their doors permanently and quietly. Each image, each closed shop represents a lost business, a lost job or jobs and with them lost financial security. Whilst there were a number of empty retail spaces prior to the outbreak, the speed at which businesses have failed, in the absence of tourism, has accelerated . I fear much more will be lost as the picturesque Georgian City falls into its greatest decline for nearly two hundred years.
This is my attempt to document just a singular element of the crisis and bring attention to the social and economic issues that Bath is currently suffering as a consequence of the Covid 19 pandemic.
